The senior school ball was held on Augist 24th in the Stamford Plaza, Auckland. The theme for the night was "Bella Noche, A beautiful night".

1st XV Rugby - 1C division winners

The 1st XV took out the 1C division championship undefeated all season. In the final they met Pakuranga for the third time and won the final 35 - 20. What a fabulous achievement. Well done players, coaches managers and all those involved in sports at Hillary

U19s Boys Basketball

The U19s boys basketball team took out the championship this year and they played extremely well in winning so many games. Well done to all involved what a fantastic achievement.

Girls Football

The girls were out in force this week playing football at Edgewater where the won 3 - 0. Well done girls and well done all involved!

Healthy Eating Healthy Action

The school has been involved in the HEHA challenge over the last few weeks and students have been working hard to accumulate points for each of their houses. The challenges are all related to activities and improving the health and well being of our students. Each activity can earn thousands of point for the house and at present Pounamu is in the lead. The final push will be on from next week as the conclusion to HEHA will be in week 9. Good luck one and all.

David Shearer visits the school

David Shearer leader of the Labour party in New Zealand visited our school and addressed the assembly. His message was to look forward and realise your dreams keep working hard in school to gain credits and achievements towards your final goal. Thank you Mr. Shearer for visiting our school.

Greg Murphy visits the school

Greg Murphy visited our school to deliver a message regarding safe driving. He presented to the pupils at an assembly and later took some questions. As a result of this presentation the Automotive dept was lucky enough to be donated two V6 engines.

Taggers, take note: Mayor Len Brown is on your tail and he will not tolerate graffiti in his city.

Sports stars Ruben Wiki and Cynthia Ta'ala backed the mayor's call when the Auckland Council's anti-graffiti campaign was launched in Otara on Tuesday.

"Tagging is not acceptable and is an affront to our communities," Mr Brown says.

"It completely discolours our communities and impacts on our urban amenities."

The Auckland Graffiti Vandalism Prevention Plan has several facets, including a 24-hour clean-up service, with an urgent two-hour callout service if the tagging is offensive, and education programmes.

Prosecution is an option for those caught tagging and getting communities involved through the Adopt-a-spot scheme is another way of curbing graffiti, Mr Brown says.

The Otara Scorpions rugby league club commissioned a mural of local league legends Manu Vatuvei, Wiki and Black Fern Ta'ala at its clubrooms in a bid to instil community pride and prevent graffiti.

Mr Brown says getting government agencies and corporates involved can help reduce tagging further.

The council's budget to reduce graffiti across the region is more than $4 million.

Mr Brown says the programmes are working, with 300,000 tags reduced to 50,000 during his time as mayor of Manukau. But there is still plenty of work to do. "It's not a battle you win overnight."

Ruben Wiki says he is honoured to be depicted on the clubrooms mural, which sends such a positive message.

"It's a huge privilege to be part of this."
