On Friday 23rd March 2012, our senior boys tag team competed in the Auckland Secondary schools Tag competition for the very first time. The tournament was held at Cox’s Bay reserve in Westmere.
There were two pools of 5 teams in the senior boys division and we were in pool B with Mangere College, Avondale College, Massey High School and Rangitoto College.
Our first match of the day was against Mangere College and our boys ran away with it, eventually winning the match 10 – 0.
In our second game we played Avondale College, and once again our boys came away with a win – defeating Avondale 3 – 0.
Our third match of the day also proved to be our toughest, and unfortunately ended up being our one and only loss for the day, when we were beaten by Massey High School 4 – 3. In our final round robin match we played Waitakere College who were from pool A and we defeated Waitakere 6 – 0.
Following the match against Waitakere the grand finalists and plate finalists were announced and Waitakere College (top of pool A) advanced to the grand final against Massey (top of pool B). Having finished second in our respective pools, we were matched against Glenfield College for the plate final.
The decision to send Waitakere College to the grand final ahead of us didn’t make sense to us, given the fact that we had just beaten them 6 – 0, but after some discussion with the organisers, the decision stood and our boys had no choice but to play in the plate final.
Our team call all day was “Hillah” “Humble!”, and in the end, that’s exactly the way our boys took the decision – with humility.
We went in to the final against Glenfield not knowing what to expect given the fact that we had not seen them in action throughout the tournament. But in the end our boys proved to be far too strong and we defeated Glenfield 10 – 0 to win the plate final.
Congratulations to our senior boys tag team! You did yourselves and your school proud. Let’s hope we can go one step better in 2013!
